The Lord’s Diner serves dinner 365 days a year to those in need. Blessed Sacrament parish stewards volunteer to serve at the Broadway building on the first Sunday of the month. Those who sign on can help prepare food (10 a.m. - Noon) or serve food (5:00 -7:45 p.m.).  A Food Safety class is required for new volunteers but is easy to obtain through a free online course. The Diocese requires all new volunteers to take a VIRTUS class. Information on both is offered below.

Blessed Sacrament parishioners volunteer on the first Sunday of each month at the Broadway location.

Volunteers are needed for the following:

  1. Prep Food - Staff arrives at 10 a.m. Volunteers are to arrive shortly after. Shift runs until about 12 p.m. Prep volunteers work closely with the Chef to prepare the evening meal. A volunteer might help mix up mashed potatoes, mix, and portion salad servings cut up desserts to portion sizes, wash dishes, set up the dining room, or process recycling.
  2. Evening service – Volunteers are to arrive by 5-5:15 p.m. Shift goes until about 7:45 p.m. Evening service volunteers might work at the following tasks: portioning food and desserts, washing dishes, serving food, filling drinks, and busing tables.

Required Documents: All volunteers need to complete The Lord’s Diner Volunteer Application Signature Page, read and sign the Volunteer Agreement page, or for volunteers under 18, complete the Parent Permission form.

Food Handler’s Training: Additionally, all volunteers need to complete Food Handler’s Training. This is an online test that can be found at http://servefood.wichita.gov/. You only need to take it once, and it no longer needs to be renewed. If anyone has completed it in the past, there is no need to retake it!

Virtus Training: Anyone 18 or older will need to be Virtus trained as well. Again, this is a one-and-done, so no need to retake it if you have completed it in the past. Contact the parish office to find out when training will be available at Blessed Sacrament, look for local classes at https://www.virtusonline.org/virtus/index.cfm, or they offer a class at The Diner on the 1st Thursday of each month at 5 pm. If you would like to sign up, just email volunteer@thelordsdiner.org.
