Don Johnson
Don Johnson, 84, transitioned to eternal life on July 1, 2024.
One of five sons born to Herbert and Margaret Johnson, Don learned from a young age that success in life required hard work and perseverance. He enjoyed sports in high school, excelling in basketball.
Don met Janet (Stoltz) while in High School and they married in 1961 in Wichita, Kansas. He earned his college degree while taking night classes at WSU and working during the day. During this time, he and his wife Janet had a newborn, Jennifer their eldest child.
Don was an incredible grandpa to his grandsons Thomas, Matthew and Noah. Whether it was pushing them on the backyard swing to heights that made the boys laugh and their parents shudder, taking them to the Ninnescah River and catching frogs, attending their football games and cheering loudly or simply giving them big hugs when they came to visit, he was in his element as a grandpa. He regularly reminded them of the importance of the“Spend, Save, Share” approach, and immediately tithed any income received.
He enjoyed reading about history and enjoyed collecting coins. His children remember how he used to give them and their friends two pennies for every “Wheat Penny” they could find. He loved sailing at Cheney Reservoir with his brother-in-law, Wayne.
Don’s oldest child Jennifer suffered a traumatic brain injury due to complications from a tonsillectomy when she was 16. Don and Janet were dedicated to the care and support of Jennifer and he worked hard to provide for his family.
Prior to working for Prudential, Don was the Manager at a John Deere dealership in Oklahoma. He enjoyed “bargaining” with farmers over the price of a tractor and would often flip a coin to determine the price and close the deal.
When his wife Janet was coordinating schedules for Perpetual Adoration of the Eucharist, Don signed up for a hard to fill 4:00 a.m. slot and kept it for years. In past parishes he had been a lector and Eucharistic Minister.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 62 years; Janet (Stoltz); his grandson, Abraham Higginbotham; and his brothers, Jerry, Daryl, Bill and Johnny.

Janet Johnson
Janet Johnson, 83, transitioned to eternal life on October 5, 2023.
While on this earth she impacted others by living her faith with compassion for all, regardless of where others were on their faith journey or way of life.
She was dedicated fully to her family and guided them by example, teaching and involvement. Janet frequently said, “The best job in the world is being a mom”. She was involved in her children’s lives as a religious education teacher, home room mom, cub scout leader and by always making their friends feel welcome in her home. No one left her home hungry, and often not without having had her brisket or homemade chicken noodle soup.
She loved animals and children, as well as her own children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She lit up when around them. Over the past two years, Janet resided at Colwich Gardens Assisted Living Facility.  She loved receiving visits from the staff members’ children and made sure there was always candy on hand to give as a treat, as well as treats for their dogs that would visit her.
A committed Catholic, Janet was very involved in the Pro-Life movement in the 1970’s, helping to start a Right to Life chapter in Atlantic, Iowa where she lived. She also hosted and supported Vietnamese refugees in Atlantic, Iowa following the Vietnam War. As a member of Blessed Sacrament Parish, Janet held a weekly hour of Perpetual Adoration of the Eucharist for decades.
Janet never stopped learning and finding ways to care for others. In her 50’s she earned her license as a nurse assistant, medical assistant, and ultimately a licensed practical nurse. She worked in nursing homes and clinics but said her passion was caring for those with Alzheimer’s or dementia.
Janet’s oldest child Jennifer suffered significant injuries as a result of complications from a tonsillectomy when she was 16. Janet became Jennifer’s staunchest supporter, ensuring her care and providing the motivation and love Jennifer needed as she worked to regain some of what she lost. While others would have railed against God for this injustice, Janet kept her faith even through the darkest times.
The world is a better place for Janet having been here and Heaven is brighter now. She is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Madge Stoltz; sister, Margo (Stoltz) Hemmen; and grandson, Abraham Higginbotham.

Susan Watkins Lane
Susan Watkins Lane, 82, passed away on Aug. 23, 2023 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, KS.
Susan loved hosting gatherings and entertaining family and friends  She possessed a giving heart.
Susan Lane lived the past 15 years in Sugar Land, Texas with Harlan Lane, her husband. Known as “Muti,” she loved the visits by her family. They took on a routine that all looked forward to during frequent visits:
A trip to Outback where Harlan drank a glass of wine and teased the wait staff; shopping while Harlan waited patiently; silver platters full of nachos, tacos, taquitos and chips at Berryhill; salads with the ducks at Becks Prime.
Susan spoiled her grandchildren, especially Jake Suellentrop, her youngest grandchild. They shopped for colorful Nike socks, Astro shirts and school clothes. Other fond memories include trips to Wichita for Molly Suellentrop’s graduation from Kapaun Mount Carmel High School. Molly and fiancé Brendon Stewart visited the Lanes before their wedding.
Ben Suellentrop learned to drive on the highways of Houston and enhanced his wardrobe with trips to the mall with Muti.  Susan named an upstairs bedroom “Hannah’s bedroom” for Ben’s wife. Hannah made several trips to help Cynthia manage Susan and Harlan’s affairs to extend their time in their home.
Susan and Cynthia, her youngest daughter, were known by sight to the staff at J. Jill at First Colony Mall in Sugar Land. They would shop, compare outfits and laugh and talk while Harlan sat on a chair and offered his thoughts on the clothes. Susan and Cynthia got pedicures and sometimes snuck away for a movie night during those visits.
Susan adored her grandchildren. Most phone calls ended with “When are my precious angels going to come see me?” She talked daily with Jake. During football season, Jacob kept Susan and Harlan updated on the NFL by telling them what channel the Cowboys, the Chiefs and Tom Brady played on.
Susan frequently offered her guests rooms to the children and their friends. Twice, the Suellentrops went to the Final Four in Houston and stayed with the Lanes. They also attended several Astros games and one special night in the club seats at the Rockets. When the Suellentrops visited, a red velvet cake from H.E.B. always awaited their arrival because she knew it was a family favorite.
In Houston, she reconnected with her Catholic faith and married Harlan in a ceremony at St. Theresa in Sugar Land. Cynthia encouraged her faith life and they traded books and Catholic publications. After Sunday Mass, the Suellentrops usually took Susan to First Watch for brunch.

Mary K. Keffer
As the cherished daughter of Floyd and Frances Keffer, Mary K. graced this earth with boundless love and compassion. Though she was preceded in death by her beloved sisterCarolyn Veatch and brother Michael Keffer, her spirit lives on in her surviving brother Dennis (Renee) Keffer, sisters Joni (Brian) Hunt, and Denise (Harley) Nelson. Her love also thrives in her cherished daughter Kellie (Chris) Wade, six adoring grandchildren Makenna, Josalyn, Layton, Chloe, Camdyn, and Callahan, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members who were all touched by her warmth and kindness.
Mary K's quest for knowledge led her from the halls of Hutchinson High School before moving during her senior year to Wichita, Kansas to finish at East High School then to the esteemed St. Mary of the Plains College. She was a beacon of hard work and perseverance, which shone brightly throughout her career at the Kansas Turnpike Authority where she served dutifully as a toll collector. Her dedication to her work was paralleled only by her commitment to her many passions.
A woman of many passions, Mary K. found joy in the simple pleasures of life. From baking cakes to embarking on delightful adventures with her family, her zest for life was contagious. She was a wonderful storyteller and relished in the company of others, her laughter echoing long after the tales were told. Her heart never far from those in need, Mary K. devoted her time to Traditions Hospice, cherishing the opportunity to serve others.
At the heart of Mary K’s life was her role as a caregiver. This she took up with grace and love, caring for her grandmother, her father, and her mother in their winter years. Yet the light of her life was always her grandchildren. Their laughter was her sweetest melody, their smiles her brightest stars. Teaching them to cook, to sew, to garden, and to explore the world around them, Mary K. was ever the adoring Grammy, their shared adventures the stuff of cherished memories.
In the words of the great Bard, “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” Mary K. played many roles in her life - daughter, sister, mother, friend, caregiver. Yet, in each role, she brought her unique love and spirit, touching the lives of all who knew her.
As we bid adieu to our beloved Mary K., let us not mourn her departure. Instead, let us celebrate the joy and love she brought into our lives, and the memories that will continue to light our days. For her spirit, like a star, never truly fades but continues to shine, a beacon of love, spirit, and thoughtful care, forever in our hearts.
Rosary will be at 7:00 pm, Sunday July 16, 2023; Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 am, Monday, July 17, 2023, both at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Peter Joseph Seaton
Peter Joseph Seaton, a beloved son, brother, uncle and friend, passed away tragically at the young age of 25 on June 23rd, 2023 in Wichita, KS. His untimely death was due to a struggle with addiction, a battle he had fought for many years. Although the loss is overwhelming, his legacy of love, faith, and joy remains with those who knew him.
Born with an infectious spirit, Peter had a unique gift of connecting with everyone he met. His life was filled with an abundance of laughter, adventurous tales, and heartfelt relationships. He truly lived by the sentiment that he "never met a stranger," and his ability to build meaningful connections with others was a testament to his kindheartedness. He especially enjoyed spending time at family reunions with his cousins.
Peter was a devout Catholic, whose faith was deeply woven into the fabric of his being. His commitment to the teachings of the Church and his devotion to Our Lady and St. Joseph was an inspiration to all who knew him. As a youth Peter served mass at his parish, Church of the Incarnation, in Rio Rancho, NM. He was also known to randomly show up to serve mass at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Rio Rancho.
Peter spent some time at Clear Creek Abbey in Oklahoma before entering Community Cenacolo in April of 2017. He loved the monks and was anxious to visit them whenever the opportunity arose. The time he spent there was a balm to his soul.
Peter’s walk at Community Cenacolo provided time to deepen his love for the rosary and contemplate the passion, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. While there, he developed a love for woodworking. He handmade many rosaries and other gifts for family and friends. Within the community, he became a teacher and encouraged others on their spiritual journey. A highlight of his time at Cenacolo was when he portrayed Simon of Cyrene during Holy Week in 2019.
Outside community, Peter also loved individualized sports. He was a wrestler, a gymnast, an equestrian, and loved to ski, rollerblade, and swim. Peter was fearless and loved taking risks.
Peter shared a special bond with his maternal grandmother Patricia Watkins. During his childhood, they traveled together to Ecuador, the Cayman Islands, Mexico, and Aspen among other destinations.
During the last weeks of his life, Peter worked at Chester’s Chophouse, in Wichita, KS. He tended the bar and waited on tables. Peter always loved a party and a banquet. We hope and pray that his eternal reward will be a Heavenly Feast.
Peter was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents; Lt. Col. Pete Seaton, and Nancy Cunningham Seaton, and maternal grandparents; Dr. Dan. H and Patricia A. Watkins.
Peter is survived by his parents, Gary and Bettina Seaton; sisters: Grace (Simon) Patton, all of Wichita, KS, Emily (Sam) Sharpe of Kansas City, MO, Sarah Seaton of Atchison, KS; brothers: Daniel Seaton of Alexandria,VA, Paul (Annie) Seaton, Andrew (Kathleen) Seaton, both of Wichita; nieces: Julia Patton, Phoebe Patton, Iris Patton, Felicity Sharpe, Hannah Sharpe, Faustine Seaton, Genevieve Seaton, and Edith Seaton; nephews: Sebastian Patton, Theodore Patton, Bosco Patton, Abraham Patton, Clement Patton, Felix Patton, Damien Seaton, and Phineas Seaton.

Mary Louise DeThample
Mary Louise (Roets) DeThample, 93, passed away Monday, April 3, 2023.
Mary Lou was born at home on January 27, 1930, in Wichita, KS. The third child of Margaret Gleeson Roets and Joseph Roets, Mary Lou had four brothers, Gene, Joseph, Bill, and Richard and three sisters, Lois, Geraldine, and Margie. She had a happy childhood tending to farm animals at their home near Lincoln and Oliver in Wichita, KS. A lovely child, at 5 years of age her father stood her on the kitchen table and said, “I’m going to enter her into a beauty contest at the Crown Uptown.” Mary Lou attended Blessed Sacrament Church and School, completing the 8th grade.
At 19 she met her one true love, Edward William DeThample, at a midnight picnic. After four months of dating, they were married at All Saints Catholic Church on January 4, 1949, on her parent’s wedding anniversary. In their first eleven years of marriage Lou & Ed were blessed with 5 children, Johnny, Sherry, Rodney, Terry, and David. Mary Lou was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. Through the years, they lived in Kansas, California, and Texas with their sons settling and marrying in Texas and their daughter staying in Wichita. Mary Lou has always loved music and she & Ed used to go dancing almost every Saturday evening. After a warm-up dance to Lawrence Welk on T.V. they’d be off to the Moose Club to dance the night away.
After forty years of marriage, Ed died in 1989, a devastating loss for her. After his passing Mary Lou worked as manager of a senior apartment community and later at the Tuesday Morning store forming many wonderful friendships. When she retired, she would often spend her summers in Texas with her sons or her sister, Margie. While at her sister’s, they would frequently attend the senior music programs where she would have fun singing and sometimes would dance holding Ed’s picture to her heart.
Mary Lou could be ornery and was very spontaneous. She loved to laugh and cut up. As she grew older and her memory faded along with her filter, her wit stayed sharp so you never knew what she might say. Her family and friends will greatly miss the laughs and the red faces they got from that.
Mary Lou is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Gene, Joseph, Bill and Dick Roets; and sisters, Lois Corey and Geraldine Dalton; her husband, Edward DeThample; eldest son, Johnny DeThample; and granddaughter, Jenny DeThample. Survivors include her beloved sister, Margie (Floyd) Hand; daughter, Sherry (Tony) Catanese of Wichita, KS; sons, Rod (Terry) DeThample, Terry (Patti) DeThample, both of Ft. Worth, TX, and David (Lynda)DeThample of Neosho, MO; sisters-in-law, Clara Townsley, Adele Meyer of Wichita and Charlotte Roets and Sue Roets of Salina, KS; and her 17 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved.
A Rosary will be held on Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. both at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament. Memorials can be made to, Blessed Sacrament Catholic School, 125 N. Quentin, Wichita, KS 67208.

November 16, 1929 - January 11, 2023 - Rosary and Funeral Mass at St. Thomas Catholic Church, April 1, 2023. Rosary at 1pm followed by Funeral Mass at 1:30 pm. Wichita, Kansas - Known throughout Wichita for her outgoing personality, love of life, and untiring acts of kindness, Betty Smith will be immensely missed by all who were blessed to know her.
The cement urn on South Fountain Street, which was donated by Betty and Shelby Smith, was decorated for holidays by Betty, who took on that project joyfully (as she did everything!). From Easter eggs to Fourth of July firecrackers, she wanted to spread that joy to her neighboring College Hill community.
Betty grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, and graduated from Southwest High School. She then attended Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California, before subsequently graduating from Kansas University in 1949 with a teaching degree. She was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority and appeared on the KU Jayhawker magazine.
Betty taught at the Cerebral Palsy School in Kansas City, and later taught Kindergarten and First Grade at private schools in KC.
While in college Betty met Shelby Smith of St Joseph, Missouri, and they were married in 1952. Shelby's FBI work moved them to Atlanta, Georgia, and then to South Orange, New Jersey, when he was an agent in New York City.
Six years later, with three young children in tow, they moved to Wichita, Kansas, when Shelby accepted the job as Head of Security for Boeing Aircraft.
Betty became active campaigning for Shelby when he entered the Republican political arena as a Kansas House Representative and later as Lieutenant Governor. She enjoyed the many travels associated with the positions…to various state conferences and also to Israel.
She loved playing tennis and was also active in many civic and volunteer organizations: Blessed Sacrament School Board, Girl Scout Leader, VP of the East High PTA, Head of the Women's Division of the City-Wide American Cancer Society Residential Drive, VP of the Starkey Action Council, member of the Junior League of Wichita, Rush Chairman and VP of the Pi Phi Alum Club, volunteer for the Center of Hope and The Lord's Diner, and a member of the Catholic Monican Circle.
One of Betty's (Nana's) passions was organizing her Family Reunions every summer at a fun destination…spanning over 40 years! She strongly encouraged other families to do the same as a way of fostering strong family ties.
She is preceded in death by her parents Elizabeth Austin Shartel and Stratton Shartel, brother Howard Austin Shartel, sisters Mary Jane Hickcox, Martha Warden, and Virginia Gardner, son Shelby Kent Smith, and husband Shelby Smith. She is survived by her four children: Leslee Campbell (Nick), Denver, CO, Liz Jackson, Denver, CO, Shartel "Skip" Smith (Kim), Ridgewood, NJ, and Stratton Smith (Kristi), Boulder, CO. Gladys Hutterer
Gladys Hutterer, 92, mother of four, died peacefully on Saturday, September 10, 2022.  An adult convert to Catholicism, she was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas and Blessed Sacrament parishes in Wichita.
Rosary will be at 7:00 pm, Wednesday, September 14, 2022, at Downing & Lahey East Mortuary. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 am, Thursday, September 15, 2022, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
Gladys, or "Olde Mutter Hutter" as she called herself in her always- entertaining annual Christmas letters, was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Anthony Hutterer; her parents, Wilbert and Matilda O'Connor; and her sisters, Bernadette Baumgart and Geraldine Kochendorfer. She is survived by her sisters, Sally Barrow and Jodelle Ista of Inver Grove, MN; daughters, Angela Zechmann of Olympia, WA and Connie Van Horne of Folsom CA; sons, Michael Hutterer of Wichita and Joseph Hutterer of Wilmington NC; and grandchildren, Jenna and Cecelia Zechmann, Zachary and Zoe Hutterer, and Theo, A. J., and Christopher Van Horne.
The middle of the five "O'Connor Sisters," Gladys spent her childhood and early adulthood in St Paul and Hastings MN.  When she was 9, Gladys’ father moved his family of daughters from town life to a Minnesota farm as the Depression unfolded. Gladys milked cows in the morning darkness and carried eggs on the school bus to sell at the grocery store in town.
After graduating high school, Gladys served as a receptionist at Haas Livestock Commission in South St. Paul MN. A gregarious "people person," she was active in the "Club with No Name," a social group for young singles, and eventually met Joe Hutterer, a Minnesota farm boy turned aeronautical engineer who would become her husband of 54 years. Together they had 4 children, whom they raised (mostly) in Wichita.
Gladys was the long-suffering but good-natured ally to her husband’s lifelong series of innovations and enterprises.
In the early 1970s, she dragged her young family to California briefly while he invested in developing a pusher-prop aircraft. Later, while he worked for Lycoming and Cessna by day, and invented airplane and auto modifications by night, she established a home around his basement and garage workshops.
In response to the oil shortage of the late 1970s, Joe and Gladys opened a Moped store, and she managed and promoted it for years. In her spare time, she became an avid garage-saler.
A “professional mom,” she dabbled in real estate and retail sales after her children left the nest, but was never truly happy until Joe rented an office space on North Rock Road, and she became the receptionist and office-mom for the Executive Park East, a suite of over 15 offices. She worked there for 17 years, retiring at age 82.
Gladys relished any opportunity to travel: Lockerbie, Osh Kosh, Panama, Chile, Japan, and many trips to visit her sisters in Minnesota and her children throughout the US. Gladys was known for her caring ways, her celebrations, and her baking; pink birthday cakes and Russian Tea Cakes were specialties. She loved parties and people; she lived a long challenging, but happy life. Her resilient spirit will be sorely missed.
A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's Association, Central & Western Kansas, 1820 E. Douglas Ave., Wichita, KS 67214.

Joan Somes
Joan (Collister) Somes was born February 10, 1932, in Terre Haute, Indiana to Glenn and Anna Mae Collister and was the youngest of four children. She passed on Sunday, August 7, 2022 in Goddard, KS.

She is survived by her children, Lynn Marsh (Wally) of Ankeny, IA, Scott Somes (Christie) of Avon, CO, Kim Diederich (Gene) of St. Louis, MO, Brad Somes (Cathy) of Goddard, KS, Dan Somes (Beverly) of Lindale, TX, and Nancy Korroch of Wichita, KS, along with thirty-two grandchildren and thirty great-grandchildren.
During high school, Joan was named Homecoming Queen and secretary of her class. After high school, Joan attended nursing school resulting in a 20-year career as a labor and delivery RN.
Joan was deeply devoted to her Catholic faith and was influenced by the love of priests and nuns from an early age. When possible, she and Don attended Mass daily. She was a member of the Third Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
After retiring from nursing, she became a hospice volunteer. In 1979 she helped start hospice in Wichita with Dr. Harry Hynes and a supporting committee. She was influenced by the challenge of caring for her own father in her home at the end of his life with limited resources and support. She later cared for her father-in-law in a similar manner.
Don and Joan were married for sixty-seven years. They were best friends and exemplified a loving, faith-filled marriage. They jointly parented seven amazing kids in a 3-bedroom house at 4011 Hammond Drive, inspiring them with faith, work ethic, love of the outdoors, and service to others.
Holidays and birthdays were made special by Joan. She was a self-taught seamstress and always had a place at her dining room table for someone lonely or in need. She was uniquely beautiful inside and out with stunning blue eyes to match her favorite color.
Grammy Love was beloved by her grandchildren connecting with each in her own unique way. She was a spunky, fierce competitor and renamed Slammy Love by the two grandsons she handily beat in a Ping Pong tournament during a family trip to Colorado.
Joan instilled in her family a deep belief in the Heavenly Father. We will miss her but take comfort knowing she has now accomplished her lifelong goal of experiencing the glories of Heaven.

A tribute for Thelma, written by her daughter-in-law, Margaret Knoff:
Thelma Rosalee (Gaston) Knoff passed to her eternal rest on Holy Saturday, April 16, 2022.
Mom was born in Kinsley, Kansas on November 5, 1930, the first of three daughters to James and Helen Gaston. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Mildred, her son Steven, and her beloved husband Robert. She leaves behind her sister, Velma, her children Leonard, Susie, Brenda, Jimmy and Greg and a legacy of 16 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Thelma graduated from Northwest Junior High School May 24, 1946 and Kansas City Kansas Public High School on the 27th of May 1949.
I don't personally know much of Mom's story in between as I met her through my husband, Jimmy, in 2004. But Mom often told me the story that when she married dad and moved to Wichita, it was only supposed to be for a couple of years!
What I can tell you about Thelma is that she was of strong will and fiercely devoted to her husband. She also had great pride in her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She enjoyed family gatherings at holidays and was especially proud of keeping everyone well fed.
When you entered her home, you would often be gestured to sit in the living room opposite her to visit about your adventures and then hear her accounting of her family and their accomplishments.
In the summer of 2017, perhaps the hottest on record, mom had a series of falls that led to a hip replacement and unfortunately a stroke that left her physically debilitated. She became a resident of Regent Park Rehabilitation and Nursing beginning in September 2017.
This was not part of her plan for her final years with dad. It was hard, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Working closely with Brenda, we made sure, through the help of Blessed Sacrament friends and volunteers that dad was able to visit her most every day until he joined her to live there in April 2019.
When dad passed away in June 2021, Mom was not able to attend his funeral. I know this was of a great loss to her and she was not able to communicate her pain except through tears.
I have grown exponentially through my visits with mom, the Regent Park staff, and the Hospice team. I am very grateful to and for all the Regent Park staff and their dedication to mom, the Magdalen Homebound Eucharistic ministry team, Father Drew, Father Matt and Melinda, and I am eternally grateful for the support and services of her Hospice team, Becky, Lenear, and Chris. There is no doubt in my mind, that when these people pass on from this life, that Thelma will be there to greet you, thank you, and welcome you to heaven with dad and our Lord Jesus Christ.
Thank you all for your prayers and support.

Julia Wagle
Julia DiSante Wagle
Julia Fausta (DiSante) Wagle, 95 ½, passed away peacefully in her home March 24, 2022. Julia was a first generation American, born to Italian immigrants. She is now reunited with her parents, Vito and Concetta DiSante; Sam, her devoted husband of 59 years; daughters, Karen and Therese; grandchildren, Nadia, Julia and Joel. Her heavenly family also includes her siblings, Anna Binter, Helen Murphy and John DiSante as well as her son-in-law, Kent Oglesbee and daughter-in-law, Cheri Blankinship-Wagle.
Julia is survived by her sister, Mary Benham; sister-in-law, Doris DiSante; sons, Tom (Susan), Mike, Steve, Tony (all of Wichita), Paul of Berlin, Germany; daughters, Mimi Oglesbee, Angela Tretbar, Peggy Watts, (all of Wichita), Joan (Don) Wagner of Davenport, Iowa, Nancy (John) Day of Chandler, Arizona; fifty-three grandchildren, fifty-three great-grandchildren (officially two in the womb), Maverick, her great-great grandchild and at least one more on the way.
Mom was a devout Catholic. She attended daily Mass, fervently prayed the rosary, and always put God first in her life. Julia was in the cradle when Blessed Sacrament Parish was founded. She attended Blessed Sacrament School from kindergarten through 8th grade and now, four generations later, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren are still filling the classrooms at Blessed Sacrament.
Julia attended St. Mary’s Cathedral High School. After high school, she began nursing school at St. Joseph’s in Kansas City where Julia met the boisterous Sam Wagle. Julia always wanted 12 children, so together with Sam, she attempted to populate East Wichita. Mom chose marriage and family over a career in nursing, for which we are all grateful. Not only did they raise 12 children, our parents also offered hospitality and a home to many others in need. Every Saturday was hamburger night at the Wagle home. Even our neighborhood friends looked forward to Mom’s delicious hamburgers.
Julia kept busy at home and somehow she still managed to be a Cub Scout leader and a Blue Bird leader for her children. Mom was an excellent seamstress and also enjoyed ceramics, knitting and crocheting. These are some of the many skills that Julia taught her children and grandchildren. Julia worked as a Unit Secretary at St. Joseph Hospital in her sunset years. She retired from that occupation at 67. Mom was a member of Blessed Sacrament Altar Society, Daughters of Isabella and Blessed Sacrament parish’s liaison for America Needs Fatima. Julia loved playing bridge. She also bowled on the Blessed Sacrament Bowling League for many enjoyable years well into her nineties.
Mom leaves us with an undivided faith and great love of family. Rosary will be at 7:00 pm, Friday April 1, 2022; Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 am, Saturday, April 2, 2022, both at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Ella Mae McGuire
Ella Mae (Frass) McGuire completed her life with us peacefully, with joy and smiles in the early hours of February 14th. Ella Mae was preceded in death by her husband, William F. McGuire M.D., her son, William F. McGuire Jr., and her sisters Teresa Weber and Esther Frass. Ella Mae began her life in Canadian, Texas on the 8th of November, 1927, and grew up on one of the largest ranches in Texas.
Ella Mae loved her card games, particularly playing with her partner, Bessie Letourneau, with whom she won a months’ long bridge tournament at Blessed Sacrament.
Ella Mae introduced her nine children to art and travel, taking some of them to all forty-eight states.(Sorry Alaska and Hawaii.) She saw all nine of them graduate college, with five of them earning graduate degrees. Though she did not finish college, she was accepted to Stephen’s College at the age of fourteen. During World War ll, Ella Mae left college to work for the Kansas City Southern railroad where she was “bonded for $1,000,000,” as a courier making bank deposits. Who would have imagined that for a young woman from an isolated ranch in Texas Panhandle?
In addition to being a past active member of the Monican Circle, the Serra Club, and the Legion of Mary, Ella Mae generously supported many charities and religious orders.
Ella Mae was fun! Early in her marriage, she and her husband enjoyed dancing. Bill and she were quite the dashing couple. She also loved jokes, a few pranks, and quoting Mae West: “When I am good, I am very good, and when I am bad, I am even better!”
Yet Ella Mae was very wholesome and devout, daily praying the Rosary, the Angelus, the Divine Mercy Chaplets and more prayers. And how Ella Mae loved her family, and they loved her. While still quite lucid, all of her children and many grand children and great grand children sent videos, made phone calls and video conferences that Ella Mae described her last days as “A love fest!”
Ella Mae is survived by her sister, Bette McDaniel, and her children, Madeline McGuire Goletz, of Madison, Connecticut; Camille McGuire, of Wichita; Emily McGuire (Steve Yost,) of Grantville, Kansas; Eileen Lovell (Mark) of Pittsburgh, Tim McGuire, of Wichita; Sharon Schultheis (Udo) of Macomb, Michigan; Michelle McGuire Hook, of Dallas, Texas; and John McGuire of Arlington, Virginia. Ella Mae is also survived by twenty-one grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.
Ella Mae enjoyed the best care possible by the staff at St. Teresa’s hospital, her family nurses, Jane McGuire and Miriam Milligan, and the staff of Harry Hynes Hospice. Thank you all so much!
The Rosary will be Thursday, February 18, 2021 at 6:00 PM at Downing and Lahey East Mortuary, and the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated this Friday, February 19, 2021 at 11:00, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Richard
Richard Sheahon
Richard Dennis "Rich” Sheahon, passed away Thursday, January 7, 2021, a day after his 74th birthday. Rosary will be at 10:00 am; Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 am, both Friday, January 15, 2021, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Graveside Service will follow at 1:30 PM, at Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina, KS.
Rich was born at Waconda Springs, KS, the eldest child to Dick and Jean Sheahon. Growing up, Rich lived in Damar and Salina, KS. He excelled in academics and athletics in high school at Sacred Heart in Salina. While attending Washburn University, Rich started working at a new restaurant named “Pizza Hut.” His Pizza Hut career would take him from making pizza’s in college to Vice President of Pizza Hut International. After his Pizza Hut career, Rich worked in the restaurant industry for many years, from opening his own restaurants, to building out franchises, to managing the supply chains for Midwest food service businesses. Whether playing sports or at work, he was a leader - quiet, humble, and always leading by example.
Rich was a man who did not have enemies nor know strangers. If you met him, you’d never forget him. As an older man, he laughed at how his grandsons thought he looked like the Quaker Oats Man with white hair and wild eyebrows. He was gentle in spirit, kind, friendly, funny, and generous.
Rich met Julie in the 8th grade, and a lifelong love story began. Rich created a life with his family filled with love, optimism, joy, laughter, silliness, kindness, and many memorable road trips across the country to visit family. Rich and Julie would celebrate their 55th anniversary this year. They taught their daughters marriage takes work, but is worth it in the end.
Overall, Rich’s greatest love was his family. He was a nonstop supporter of his siblings in everything they did throughout their lives. He was a constant presence at his nieces, nephews and grandchildren’s sporting and school events. But he really had a special love for his grandchildren. As Grandpa, he cheered on Christopher in sports and school and later when he was commissioned an Officer in the United States Army. He supported Catherine in her volleyball matches and proud she was studying to be a nurse like her Grammy. As Pop-Pop, he taught Elliott and Luke how to say nighttime prayers, play golf, and how to throw a football. He taught them all to say “no bites,” and to eat dessert - especially ice cream - before dinner. He loved all of his family unconditionally, beyond words.
He truly was the best Husband, Dad, Son, Brother, Uncle Rich and Friend. He was our Hero. Our Champion. And he will be immensely missed.
Preceded in death by his parents, Richard “Dick” and Arlene “Jean” (Pehowic) Sheahon; sister, Joan Wood.
Survived by his wife, Julie Sheahon of Wichita; daughters, Heather (Mick) Whelan of Carl Junction, MO, Meredith (Aaron) Mansfield of Wichita; brothers, Jack (Anita) Sheahon of Salina, Mike Sheahon of Lawrence, Steve (Bonnie) Sheahon of Wichita; sister, Mary Pat (Jim) Weese of Salina; brother in-law Terry Wood, Topeka, KS; grandchildren, Christopher Whelan, Catherine Whelan, Elliott Mansfield, Luke Mansfield; aunts, Audra (Herb) Henderson of Middletown, PA, Carol (Mark) Boyer of Leawood, KS; 15 nieces and nephews; 23 great-nieces and nephews; and a large extended family, and many lifelong friends.
The family wish to thank the incredible Trauma Team at Ascension Via Christi St Francis Hospital for their care and support, and Dr. Lamont Bloom for his years of friendship and care to Rich.
